Old Age as Otherness That Happens to Others and Never to Us
Un cuerpo que cae is part of the Infinite Archive of Old Ages. I began this
research from this question: what does it mean to grow old? In my family,
everyone died young, and I never saw anyone reach old age. A few days
before she died, my mother told me she thought it was better not to grow old
because it scared her. And something fundamental is this: not reaching old
age costs us life itself!
We live in a world that is increasingly long-lived. For example, in Argentina,
in 1970, 1.5% of the population was over 80 years old; in 2010 it was 2.5%; in
2020 it was 6%; and it is estimated to double by 2050.
So, what alternative imaginaries—ones that embrace age without disguising or
hiding it—can be created? The market has expelled old bodies and, in return,
sold us eternal youth and immortality.
I therefore set out to create this archive, with different non-professional actors
from all over the world, to document through art what it is like to live old age
in each culture, until the final work can be performed by me, if I reach old
age.
Thinking about old age through art is necessary to create a new symbolic field
in a world that lives longer—and in many cases, lives better. It is necessary to
reflect on the new inequalities and new subjectivities that emerge in this
changing scenario.
There is an urgency to generate reflections for the near future.
What does it mean to be old today?
